yawn.

i'm more excited about fable 3 next week.

i never played fallout, but watched bp play for hours on end. never thought it was exciting and never had the desire to pick it up.

it is getting good reviews tho. but i chalk that up to every blogger and reviewer being fallout fanboys and the franchise can do no wrong in their eyes.

most engrossing and customizable rpg series on modern systems. fable 3 will be fun too, but that's the cutesy action rpg. like for people that don't have patience for a full rpg. for a fallout game, you have to give it a dozen hours or so before it kicks in and you're invested in your character. the perk system is great. vats is an amazing combat system. the dungeon crawling and puzzle solving is top notch. the world is fully realized. the stories are always really entertaining.

Probably the most telling is that I can sit and talk with a friend who played through it and they will have a totally different experience than I did because of the different choices they make.

I spent over 130 hours on fallout 3 and still have only about 60% of the map unlocked and several levels to go before I max out.

you are right about having to have patience for that game. that's the problem i have with it. i don't have the patience for it.

and v.a.t.s. oy vey.

here's a great mechanic. let's make a fps that has a system that stops time so you can get stats on where the best place to shoot is. oy.

it's an rpg. vats is turn based combat. it's a strategic element. thinking of it as an fps is dumb. it's also a third person shooter but you don't see people complaining it doesn't play like socom or gears. its also got stealth elements but you don't see people complaining about how it's unlike metal gear.

here's another problem i ran into in fallout and oblivion.

i've always been a major hoarder in video games. ever since san andreas when i had every garage filled with some rare vehicle, to fable and borderlands where i had hundreds of useless items. well in fallout and oblivion, i was constantly encumbered and could never get rid of shit cuz i couldn't figure out what was valuable and what was not. so i could never friggin move or moved as slow as shit.

Fable 3 won't hold a candle to Fallout. I can't fucking wait until I have $60 extra bucks to buy New Vegas. Played fallout 3 twice through with all dlc.

You're just not used to rpgs. It's all about exploring and customizing your character and the stories you run into while exploring the wasteland.

I had fun last night but I'm just getting started. I'm specializing my character in melee, unarmed and explosives. So I just charge into rooms throwing tnt or a grenade and then running around punching people to death or braining them with a tire iron in V.A.T.S.

I like the rock, paper, scissors kind of balance when it comes to your stats and perks and how the world reacts to it. So in this run through I won't have many dialog options but I'll be able to barrel through dungeons and gain a lot of experience real quick. Then I'll play it again with a totally different set up and see how the game reacts.

They are funny to play sometimes but we should do away with first person games entirely.
